چکیده

Abstract Gold mobilization, transfer, and concentration in the Earth’s crust are controlled by hydrothermal sulfur- chloride-bearing fluids. Yet exact chemical identity, structure, stability of Au-bearing species and, particular, respective contributions sulfide (HS−) trisulfur ion (S3⋅−) ligands to Au transport lack direct situ evidence. Here we employed high energy resolution fluorescence detection X-ray absorption spectroscopy (HERFD-XAS) on aqueous sulfate/sulfide/S3⋅−-bearing solutions at typical temperatures pressures (T = 350 °C, P 600 bar) reveal differences dissolved spectral signatures indicative contrasting fluid-phase speciation as a function acidity redox conditions. Combined with solubility measurements quantum-chemical thermodynamic modeling, our spectroscopic data provide evidence for Au(HS)S3− Au(HS)2− complexes predominant acidic-to-neutral alkaline conditions, respectively. Our findings thus directly confirm recent scheme S-bearing fluids established using less methods, highlight an important role gold mobilization hydrothermal-magmatic deposits associated subduction zones. More generally, results show that HERFD-XAS enables identification structural coordination features metal virtually unresolvable classical XAS techniques. By avoiding limitations techniques, integrated high-resolution approach opens perspectives studies other metals T-P fluids, potentially silicate melts, inaccessible observation nature.

High-resolution X-ray emission and X-ray absorption spectroscopy.

In this review, high-resolution X-ray emission and X-ray absorption spectroscopy will be discussed. The focus is on the 3d transition-metal systems. To understand high-resolution X-ray emission and resonant X-ray emission, it is first necessary to spend some time discussing the X-ray absorption process. Section II discusses 1s X-ray absorption, i.e., the K edges, and section III deals with 2p X...

Distribution and speciation of bromine in mammalian tissue and fluids by X-ray fluorescence imaging and X-ray absorption spectroscopy.

Bromine is one of the most abundant and ubiquitous trace elements in the biosphere and until recently had not been shown to perform any essential biological function in animals. A recent study demonstrated that bromine is required as a cofactor for peroxidasin-catalysed formation of sulfilimine crosslinks in Drosophila. In addition, bromine dietary deficiency is lethal in Drosophila, whereas br...

High energy resolution off-resonant spectroscopy for x-ray absorption spectra free of self-absorption effects.

X-ray emission spectra recorded in the off-resonant regime carry information on the density of unoccupied states. It is known that by employing the Kramers-Heisenberg formalism, the high energy resolution off-resonant spectroscopy (HEROS) is equivalent to the x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) technique and provides the same electronic state information. Moreover, in the present Letter we demo...

Electrochemical Oxidation of Size-Selected Pt Nanoparticles Studied Using in Situ High-Energy-Resolution X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy

High-energy-resolution fluorescence-detected Xray absorption spectroscopy (HERFD-XAS) has been applied to study the chemical state of ∼1.2 nm size-selected Pt nanoparticles (NPs) in an electrochemical environment under potential control. Spectral features due to chemisorbed hydrogen, chemisorbed O/ OH, and platinum oxides can be distinguished with increasing potential. Pt electro-oxidation foll...

Probing Cu(I) in homogeneous catalysis using high-energy-resolution fluorescence-detected X-ray absorption spectroscopy.

Metal-to-ligand charge transfer excitations in Cu(I) X-ray absorption spectra are introduced as spectroscopic handles for the characterization of species in homogeneous catalytic reaction mixtures. Analysis is supported by correlation of a spectral library to calculations and to complementary spectroscopic parameters.
