Gibberellins

What are they? The gibberellins make up a family of small organic compounds derived from a common 20-carbon precursor. They regulate growth and development in plants and their chemical structure superficially resembles that of steroid hormones. So far, more than 100 gibberellins have been identified. Fortunately, any one plant species produces only a few of the known gibberellins. Furthermore, ...

Gibberellins repress photomorphogenesis in darkness.

Plants undergo two different developmental programs depending on whether they are growing in darkness (skotomorphogenesis) or in the presence of light (photomorphogenesis). It has been proposed that the latter is the default pathway followed by many plants after germination and before the seedling emerges from soil. The transition between the two pathways is tightly regulated. The conserved COP...

Trichome Formation: Gibberellins on the Move

Plant trichomes are specialized epidermal protrusions that, depending on species, are located on the surfaces of leaves, stems, petioles, sepals, seed coats, and other aerial organs. Trichomes not only defend plants against biotic and environmental hazard, but also are able to synthesize, store, and secrete a large number of specialized (secondary) metabolites, including those with significant ...

Monoclonal antibodies to 13-deoxy-gibberellins.

The production and characterization of two high affinity rat monoclonal antibodies to 13-deoxy-gibberellins is described. Hybrid myelomas were derived from rats immunized with an immunogenic keyhole limpet hemocyanin-gibberellin conjugate, linked at carbon-3 to gibberellin A(4) via a hemisuccinate bridge. The selected monoclonal antibodies were characterized by a competitive radioimmunoassay.

Mechanistic action of gibberellins in legume nodulation.

Legume plants are capable of entering into a symbiotic relationship with rhizobia bacteria. This results in the formation of novel organs on their roots, called nodules, in which the bacteria capture atmospheric nitrogen and provide it as ammonium to the host plant. Complex molecular and physiological changes are involved in the formation and establishment of such nodules. Several phytohormones...
