Feedback between Basin Morphology and Sediment Transport at Tidal Inlets: Implications for Channel Shoaling

چکیده

Increasing societal pressures (e.g., population growth and urbanization) are driving land use change practices in coastal areas that could potentially alter the hydrodynamics sediment transport patterns near inlets ways might exacerbate existing shoaling conditions. To investigate potential impact of development, a numerical model is used to predict long-term evolution an idealized lagoonal-type barrier island inlet under five different morphological conditions transitioned from net import export. The simulations were designed address effect inter-tidal placement reclamation on resulting deposition/erosion patterns. Estuaries deeper devoid extensive tidal flats tended promote had greater propensity channel shoaling. Simulations characteristic showed export, yet likelihood was increased because some material eroded deposited channels as opposed being carried out throat. Alternatively, it found regions which intertidal area restricted elevations higher frame, also produced loss zone bypass sections, reducing

Sediment patches, sediment supply, and channel morphology

Bed surface particle size patchiness may play a central role in bedload and morphologic response to changes in sediment supply in gravel-bed rivers. Here we test a 1-D model (from Parker ebook) of bedload transport, surface grain size, and channel profile with two previously published flume studies that documented bed surface response, and specifically patch development, to reduced sediment sup...

Engineering of Tidal Inlets and Morphologic Consequences

Tidal inlets are part of the coastal sediment-sharing system, and an inlet will modify the nearshore and estuary morphology, as well as the up-drift and down-drift beaches. Morphologic response to an inlet varies over several time and spatial scales. This chapter discusses inlet morphology and related functional design considerations that must balance navigation and shoreprotection requirements...

Evidence for nonlinear, diffusive sediment transport on hillslopes and implications for landscape morphology

Steep, soil-mantled hillslopes evolve through the downslope movement of soil, driven largely by slope-dependent transport processes. Most landscape evolution models represent hillslope transport by linear diffusion, in which rates of sediment transport are proportional to slope, such that equilibrium hillslopes should have constant curvature between divides and channels. On many soil-mantled hi...
