Fabrication of biodegradable nanofibers via melt extrusion of immiscible blends

Abstract Polylactic acid (PLA) and poly(3-hydroxybutyrate- co -4-hydroxybutyrate) (P(3HB- -4HB)) nanofibers were prepared by melt extrusion of immiscible blends PLA/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) P(3HB- -4HB)/PVA via in situ formation microfibrils during the process. The morphology after removal PVA with water was studied using scanning electron microscopy. intermolecular interactions Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. compatibility components PVA/PLA better than that PVA/P(3HB- -4HB) blends. By varying process conditions, average diameter PLA could be controlled range 78–150 nm 274–424 nm.
