Effects of phase difference between instability modes on boundary-layer transition

چکیده
Phase effect on the modal interaction of flow instabilities is investigated for laminar-to-turbulent transition in a flat-plate boundary-layer flow. Primary and secondary three-dimensional (3-D) oblique waves at various initial phase differences between these two instability modes. Three numerical methods are used systematic approach entire process, i.e. before onset well into fully turbulent Floquet analysis predicts subharmonic resonance where mode locally resonates given basic composed steady laminar fundamental mode. Because limited to resonating mode, nonlinear parabolised stability equation (PSE) conducted with shifts respect The application PSE offers insights affected by difference up weakly stage transition. Large-eddy simulation (LES) complete boundary layer because becomes prohibitively expensive late modulation leads significant delay location $\Delta Re_{x, tr} \simeq 4\times 10^5$ as predicted current LES. Effects spatial evolution shape further investigated. mechanism discussed, based results relevant literature data.

Effects of long-wavelength Klebanoff modes on boundary-layer instability
It is known that low-frequency components of three-dimensional vortical disturbances in the free stream can be entrained into the boundary layer due to the nonparallel flow effect, producing significant distortion in the form of alternate thickening and thinning of the layer in the spanwise direction. This observation goes back to Dryden (1936) and Taylor (1939) who, in fact, suggested that the...
متن کاملHelical modes in boundary layer transition
Observations are presented to show that in an adverse pressure gradient boundary layer, beneath free-stream turbulence, the interaction between Klebanoff streaks and naturally arising instability waves leads to helical disturbances which break down to form turbulent spots. This occurs under low to moderate levels, 1%–2%, of free-stream turbulence. At high levels of free-stream turbulence, conve...
متن کاملRole of shear layer instability in the transition of boundary layer on a bluff body
The boundary layer on a circular cylinder undergoes a transition to turbulence at, approximately, Re=2 x 105. This is accompanied with a significant reduction in drag. Using a stabilized finite element formulation, we have conducted two-dimensional computations for flow past a cylinder using a very fine mesh close to it. It has been shown by researchers earlier that the genesis and formation of...
متن کاملCompressibility Effects on Roughness-induced Boundary Layer Transition
Direct numerical simulation is used to investigate the effect of compressibility on roughness-induced boundary layer transition. Computations are performed in both the lowand the high-speed regime (at free-stream Mach number Me = 2) for an isolated three-dimensional element with cubic shape and for two-dimensional roughness strips. For each configuration two values of the roughness height Reyno...
