Early Miocene carbonate ramp development in a warm ocean, North West Shelf, Australia

چکیده

Although carbonate ramps are widely described from the geological record, there is still a debate on relative influence of water temperature, trophic conditions and type factories their development. The ca 2400 km long Australian North West Shelf among largest Cenozoic provinces worldwide, records transition an early Miocene ramp to middle rimmed platform. This change observable publicly available seismic data, giving opportunity investigate environmental influences platform evolution. study combines macroscopic petrographic descriptions strata cropping out in Cape Range Anticline (North Cape, southern end Shelf) time-equivalent well cuttings adjacent, offshore Exmouth Sub-basin. Particular emphasis placed identification larger benthic foraminifera at broad generic level, because differing taxa have limited range habitable that serve as proxies. results show dominantly composed with minor coralline algae proximal platform, grading micropackstones more distal A margin inferred lithological data basis lack framework builders presence open oceanic indicators. Facies shallow upward through individual outcrops, trend towards north-west. These trends along outcrops consistent interpretations. Identification warm, oligotrophic affinity suggests was formed warm ocean, despite absence coral reefs. Changes facies depth do not seem be associated changes morphology, latter may been controlled by physical parameters, such currents waves.

Deep ocean carbonate ion increase during mid Miocene CO2 decline

Characterised by long term cooling and abrupt ice sheet expansion on Antarctica ~14 Ma ago, the mid Miocene marked the beginning of the modern ice-house world, yet there is still little consensus on its causes, in part because carbon cycle dynamics are not well constrained. In particular, changes in carbonate ion concentration ([CO3(2-)]) in the ocean, the largest carbon reservoir of the ocean-...

On the Use of the Geoid in Geophysics: A Case Study Over the North-West Shelf of Australia

The geoid is the fundamental surface that defines the figure of the Earth. It is approximated by mean sealevel and undulates due to spatial variations in the Earth's gravity field. The use of the geoid in regional geophysics is illustrated for the North-West Shelf of Australia by removing long-wavelength geoid features, due predominantly to deep-Earth mass anomalies, in order to reveal near-sur...

Ocean mixing beneath Pine Island Glacier ice shelf, West Antarctica

Ice shelves around Antarctica are vulnerable to an increase in ocean-driven melting, with the melt rate depending on ocean temperature and the strength of flow inside the ice-shelf cavities. We present measurements of velocity, temperature, salinity, turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rate, and thermal variance dissipation rate beneath Pine Island Glacier ice shelf, West Antarctica. These mea...

Warm ocean is eroding West Antarctic Ice Sheet

[1] Satellite radar measurements show that ice shelves in Pine Island Bay have thinned by up to 5.5 m yr 1 over the past decade. The pattern of shelf thinning mirrors that of their grounded tributaries the Pine Island, Thwaites and Smith glaciers and ocean currents on average 0.5 C warmer than freezing appear to be the source. The synchronised imbalance of the inland glaciers is the result of r...

The shelf-edge current north-west of Ireland

Measurements of the slope current at two locations north-west of Ireland have been made between April and December 1994, 40 m above the seabed in a water depth of 660 m. A persistent poleward alongslope current was observed at both locations, with measured means of 10 and 21 cm sÿ1 respectively. A CTD transect across the slope near one mooring indicated the presence of a light, warm, saline cor...
