چکیده
Objective: The objective of this study is to investigate whether age a significant risk factor for spinal nerve injury following selective neck dissection (SND) in patients with head and cancer. Methods: A retrospective cohort was conducted on who had undergone SND cancer at tertiary hospital between 2020 2022. primary outcome the incidence after SND. secondary outcomes included types severity impact these outcomes. Results: total 78 were subdivided into two groups. Two shoulder-specific questionnaires (the Shoulder Pain Disability Index (SPADI) Questionnaire (SDQ)) administered assess shoulder morbidity postoperatively. Twelve showed impairment surgery. We divided sample age-based groups; older group higher rate SAN younger lower improvement over time. Conclusion: This suggests that Older are more likely experience than patients. findings may help development strategies prevent undergoing

Spinal accessory nerve neuropathy following neck dissection.
UNLABELLED The most common complication of neck dissection is shoulder dysfunction due to manipulation of spinal accessory nerve, resulting in trapezius muscle atrophy mainly in procedures involving the posterior neck triangle. AIM This study used electromyography to evaluate the injury to the spinal accessory nerve following neck dissection. MATERIALS AND METHODS Prospective case series of...

Iatrogenic injury to the spinal accessory nerve (SAN) during neck dissection may result in significant and avoidable morbidity in the form of 'shoulder syndrome'. The authors describe a simple method, based on the anatomy of the sternocleidomastoid muscle (SCM), which allows consistent and rapid identification of the SAN in the upper neck during dissection, thereby facilitating its preservation.

BACKGROUND From January 1981 through March 1996, 20 patients with head and neck cancer underwent radical neck dissection with sacrifice of the spinal accessory nerve and immediate reconstruction of the nerve using a microsurgical technique and a cable graft of the great auricular nerve. METHODS Postoperative shoulder function was assessed via a subjective questionnaire, objective strength tes...
متن کاملShoulder complaints after neck dissection; is the spinal accessory nerve involved?
UNLABELLED The purpose of the current study was to investigate the relation between shoulder morbidity (pain and range of motion), and the function of the spinal accessory nerve after neck dissection. Identifying dysfunction of the nerve gives insight in the mechanisms of post-operative shoulder complaints. In total 112 patients after neck dissection (73 males/39 females), mean (SD) age 61 (13)...
متن کاملMaximizing shoulder function after accessory nerve injury and neck dissection surgery: A multicenter randomized controlled trial.
BACKGROUND Shoulder pain and dysfunction after neck dissection may result from injury to the accessory nerve. The effect of early physical therapy in the form of intensive scapular strengthening exercises is unknown. METHODS A total of 59 neck dissection participants were prospectively recruited for this study. Participants were randomly assigned to either the intervention group (n = 32), con...
