Do ISO Certifications Enhance Internationalization? The Case of Portuguese Industrial SMEs

In the last decades, academic literature has devoted considerable attention to determinants of export performance. result those research efforts in identifying and examining influence such determinants, presents a wide set variables associated with higher levels exports. This paper provides contribution that by trying evidence impact firm certification—namely, terms firm’s quality, environmental, health safety management systems—on The analyses an unbalanced sample 1684 Portuguese industrial SMEs for period 2010 2020, uses other internationalization as control variables, explores possibility moderating effects on certification–internationalization relationship. Two alternative econometric methods are employed: random-effects model Tobit model. results importance firms, especially low or medium–low technology sectors, have certain ISO certifications order further develop their activities increase foreign acceptance, particularly European Union markets. Further, certification seems reinforce positive relation between size internationalization.
