The synthesis and photochemical characterization of bicomponent molecular switches based on covalently tethered dithienylethene photochromes is described. Both photochromic units undergo complete switching between the fully cyclised and fully non-cyclised states despite a significant level of electronic communication between the individual units and their proximity.

Carboxylate free μ-oxo bridged ferric wheel with a record exchange coupling.

A novel oxo-bridged, carboxylate free 'ferric wheel' was isolated with the molecular formula [FeIII8(μ-O)4(L(2-))8] (1). Magnetic susceptibility measurements suggest that the Fe(III) ions are coupled antiferromagnetically and magnetic data modelling yields J1 = -26.4 cm(-1), J2 = -170 cm(-1) which are rationalized by DFT calculation. Photochromism of a water-soluble vesicular [2.2]paracyclophane-bridged imidazole dimer.

Here we report the first photochromism of a newly designed [2.2]paracyclophane-bridged imidazole dimer in water. The photochromic dye with a hydrophilic and a hydrophobic substituent forms vesicles in water and shows instantaneous colouration upon UV light irradiation and successive rapid fading in the dark.
