Determination of neonatal case-specific fatality rates in a tertiary health institution in North Central Nigeria

Abstract Background The current neonatal mortality rate in Nigeria (37/1000) is among the highest world and major causes have consistently been reported as sepsis, perinatal asphyxia prematurity. However, case-specific fatality which defines risk of dying from these other morbidities rarely emphasized. Determination rates (CSFR) may inform a change our approach to care interventions eventually bring about much-needed reduction rate. Our aim was determine for common hospitalized neonates at National Hospital Abuja (NHA). Methods Relevant demographic clinical data on all admitted into NICU NHA over period 13 months (January 2017 February 2018) were extracted Neonatal Registry database analyzed using appropriate statistical methods with SPSS version 20 software. computed predominant addition determination associated factors. Results conclusion A total 730 admitted, out 391 (53.6%) females, 396 (54.5%) inborn (54.2%) term. three most prevalent prematurity 272(37.2%), Jaundice 208(28.4%) 91(12.5%) while 47/113(41.6%), congenital malformations 27/113(23.9%) 26/113(23%). Congenital had 27/83(32.5%) followed by Perinatal Asphyxia 26/91(28.6%) 47/272(20.7%). pattern differed between born babies. Implications targeted are discussed.
