Determinants of Physical Activity Practices in Metropolitan Context: The Case of Lisbon Metropolitan Area, Portugal

Physical activity is an important health determinant for people’s quality of life and well-being. This study intends to (1) identify how the practice physical fits into families’ daily lives; (2) verify what extent influenced by urban model, family composition, perceptions. A survey was applied 410 families (corresponding 1006 individuals) in Lisbon Metropolitan Area (LMA), Portugal, focusing on different activities—gym, swimming, walking/trekking/hiking, cycling. Results are based descriptive bivariate data analysis show existence asymmetries LMA. The context impacts choice frequency practices. typology age proved be more differentiating factors than income, being reinforced lives (e.g., movements, transport modes, etc.). Positive self-perceptions levels also conducive active practices, contrary negative perceptions neighborhood that related practices peripheral destinations. Conclusions highlight need differentiated measures promotion according territories communities’ characteristics a multilevel approach.
