Delos Archaeological Marbles: A Preliminary Geochemistry‐Based Quarry Provenance Study

چکیده
This paper presents for the first time chemical data on ancient (Antiquity period) marble quarries of Delos Island and some architectural marbles from its famous exceptionally well-preserved archaeological site. geological substratum is mostly composed granite, including very few decametric enclaves. However, Delian architecture dominated by gneiss marbles. A large quantity had thus to be imported neighbouring Cycladic Islands continental Greece. Their provenances remain unknown. Several analytical methods have been developed in archaeometry years determine origin marbles, but they are generally destructive. reports a methodology based hand-held portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) analyser detect major trace elements often used provenance studies. Drawbacks using those limitations attached instruments were frequently discussed. Here usefulness pXRF research was tested association with principal component analysis (PCA). Two artefacts presumed selected results showed that one them came undoubtedly quarry while other not local origin. protocol appeared powerful tool when conventional destructive analyses precluded.

A Preliminary Assessment of Rock Slope Stability in Tropical Climates: A Case Study at Lafarge Quarry, Perak, Malaysia
The stability analysis of rock slopes is a complex task for the geotechnical engineers due to the complex nature of the rock mass in a tropical climate that often has discontinuities in several forms, and consequently, in several types of slope failures. In this work, a rock mass classification scheme is followed in a tropical environment using the Rock Mass Rating (RMR) and Geological St...
متن کاملScientific methods and applications to archaeological provenance studies
The study of prehistoric exchange systems is a major topic of archaeological research, since the reconstruction of trade is important not only for understanding economic aspects of ancient societies, but also the social and political systems in which it operated. In addition to changes in theoretical approaches to studying trade, technological advancements in our ability to determine the source...
متن کاملReconstructing Provenance Preliminary Results - Technical Report
Therefore, we developed a complementary approach, which considers the simpler problem of reconstructing provenance intended as dependencies between entities. The rationale is that once we are able to distinguish dependent entities, it becomes possible to refine the dependency relationships into sequences of operations. In the following, we describe a prototype implementation of this approach an...
متن کاملRadiocarbon dating of prehistoric phytoliths: a preliminary study of archaeological sites in China
Phytoliths can occlude some organic carbon during their deposition in plants. This carbon fraction is recognised as an ideal dating material because of its high resistance to decomposition and post-deposition contamination at the time of phytolith formation. However, the reliability of phytolith radiocarbon dating has recently been questioned. The development of a new extraction protocol for ph...
