چکیده

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, PAHs are carcinogenic, mutagenic and persistent organic compounds commonly generated from incomplete combustion of matters. Beans, Phaseolus vulgaris maize, Zea mays form part staple foods consumed highly rich in protein carbohydrate respectively. This study compared the concentration levels sixteen priority different types beans (Potasikum, white iron, brown Gausau Nija red) maize (white, yellow pop corn) obtained various markets south east Nigeria. The purchased samples were picked, ground extraction was by sonication with a solvent mixture dichloromethane hexane ratio 3:1. determination gas chromatography coupled flame ionization detector, GC-FID. result showed that (× 10-2 µg/kg) lower molecular weight PAHs, LMW detected analyzed ranged 8.842±4.743 to 12.590±8.068 iron respectively percentages 41.09% 44.90% 5.998±4.725 9.385±11.339 corn at 25.58% 34.46%. While high weight, HMW varied 12.673±5.554 16.998±3.129 red 58.88% 63.95% 17.84±11.768 18.153±10.421 74.83% 67.43% probable carcinogenic PAH8 concentrations (8.875±2.725 11.796±3.018) × µg/kg (10.82±6.183 13.573±8.789) respectively.. Diagnostic calculated fuel be main source emission. all very low levels, than permissible limit 1.0 established EFSA for cereals cereal based products. Hence these (PAHs) can long time accumulation body harmful. There is need establish other legume grains either European Food Safety Authority, or regulatory bodies.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) traceability in old buffalos living in south west part of Iran

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a class of complex substances that are produced during incomplete combustion of fossil fuels. PAHs are known to be persistent pollutants which can remain in nature for years. In 1991 during the first Persian Gulf War south west part of Iran was contaminated heavily. This study was undertaken to see if the PAHs can be traceable in animal tissues many...

Biodegradation of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Petroleum Contaminated Soils

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are a class of potentially hazardous chemicals of environmental and health concern. PAHs are one of the most prevalent groups of contaminants found in soil. Biodegradation of complex hydrocarbon usually requires the cooperation of more than single specie. In this research biotreatment of PAH (phenanthrene) was studied in a solid-phase reactor using indigenou...

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in air from industrial areas in Lagos and Ogun states, Nigeria

There is currently scarce information on the occurrence and distributions of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the air from industrial estates in Nigeria. Hence, the present study aims to evaluate the extent and sources of pollution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the air from some industrial estates in Lagos and Ogun States, Nigeria. Ten air samples have been collected from the...

Human health risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in smoked fish species from markets in Southern Nigeria

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) levels in four commonly consumed smoked fish species from markets in Southern Nigeria were assessed to evaluate possible human health risks associated with consumption. Varying levels of PAH congeners were observed in the fish tissues with the highest total concentration of PAHs in Scomber scombrus. High concentrations of benzo(a)pyrene was observed in Cl...

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Plants of Shadegan Wetland: Halocnemum strobilaceum and Suaeda maritima

Plants are known to bioaccumulate many contaminants. Petroleum-derived compounds, such as saturated hydrocarbons and PAHs are widespread persistent environmental contaminants. Deposition of soot and precipitation of black rain have occurred in the Shadegan Wetland. In this study, PAHs in plant parts of two prominent species of halophytes, Halocnemum strobilaceum and Suaeda maritima were determi...
