Changes in spectral quality of underwater light alter phytoplankton community composition

Light is a fundamental resource for phytoplankton. To utilize the available light, most phytoplankton species possess pigments in taxon-specific combinations and quantities, which turn result specific use of certain wavelengths. This optimizes light efficiency, allows complementary may be an additional driver community structure. While effects intensity on biomass production composition have been intensively studied, here we focused spectrum quality (thus color) natural community. In controlled mesocosm experiment reduced supplied wavelength range to its blue, green, or red part compared responses each treatment full control over 28 d. Highest growth rates were observed under lowest light. absorption by communities showed adaptation toward range. Community was significantly affected treatments, driven Bacillariophyta Chlorophyta, whereas pigment not. Furthermore, lower richness but higher evenness occurred when exposed spectrum. We expected response changes combination sorting acclimation; however, effect turned out stronger. Our study that, even if might acclimate, affect primary composition.
