Centering Equity in Sustainable Food Systems Education

Sustainable food systems education (SFSE) is rapidly advancing to meet the need for developing future professionals who are capable of effective decision-making regarding agriculture, food, nutrition, consumption, and waste in a complex world. Equity, particularly racial equity its intersectional links with other inequities, should play central role efforts advance SFSE given harmful social environmental externalities ongoing oppression systemic inequities such as lack access faced by racialized and/or marginalized populations. However, few institutional intra-disciplinary resources exist on how engage students discussion about related topics SFSE. We present perspectives based our multi-institutional collaborations develop apply pedagogical materials that center while building students' skills thinking, critical reflection, affective engagement. Examples provided undergraduate graduate sustainable curricula embrace complexity recognize layers, or underlying experiences feelings emotions, when engaging equity, justice, oppression, privilege.
