Brothers or invaders? How crisis-driven migrants shape voting behavior

We study the electoral effects of arrival 1.3 million Venezuelan refugees in Colombia as a consequence humanitarian crisis. exploit fact that forced migrants disproportionately locate places with earlier settlements Venezuelans after intensification find larger migration shocks increase voter’s turnout and shift votes from left-to right-wing political ideologies. These are predominantly driven by concerns on economic well novel channel we call strategic misinformation, whereby parties make shock salient to voters order demonize agenda competitors.
