Atlanto‐occipital subluxation in an adult Thoroughbred gelding

A 13-year-old gelding was referred to the University of Liverpool Equine Hospital for further investigation ataxia and neck pain following a suspected traumatic incident in field 5 days prior. The case report documents clinical presentation, ultrasonographic, radiographic computed tomographic (CT) findings right lateral atlanto-occipital (AO) subluxation. In brief, presentation included abnormal head carriage, cranial cervical swelling with associated pain. Radiography showed deviation poll subluxation AO joint significant widening left joint. CT undertaken standing which confirmed luxation occipital condyle relation articular process such that atlas located medial condyle. subjected euthanasia post-mortem resolved closed traction procedure. This initiates discussion diagnosis, management outcome this uncommon injury. use gives previously undocumented detail on nature assisted reduction
