Assessment of Antibiotic Prescription Pattern Using who Prescribing Indicators and Aware Categorization of Antibiotics

Background: Medicines play a crucial role in the healthcare delivery of hospital. The appropriate use medicines gives us assessment quality health services being provided particular region. Aim: To evaluate prescribing practices and antibiotic utilization patterns so that extent irrational can be assessed by comparing them with published ideal values set WHO. Study design: Retrospective, cross-sectional study. Place duration study: Teaching Hospital Faisalabad: Independent University (IUH), from Jan 2018 to June/July 2018. Methodology: 200 cases were selected through systematic random sampling medicine/surgery wards pharmacy registers. standard World Health Organization indicators AWaRe categorization antibiotics used assess physicians/surgeons. Published standards for each compared study findings identify drug use. Results: Most facility met with. Drug Therapeutic Committee (DTC) was functional. Standard treatment guideline booklets (STGs) Essential Drugs List (EDL) hospital available. 88% key drugs listed EDL available stock. expenditure on total 17%. Regarding indicators: average number prescribed per encounter 6 (optimal value 1.6–1.8). Average no prescription amounted almost 1 (0.925). % prescriptions an 72% 20-26.8%).72% formulary 100%). Conclusion: compliance WHO, significant deviation observed. Education training physicians according WHO parameters is required ensure rational prescribing.
