ARE REPLICATION STUDIES INFREQUENT BECAUSE OF NEGATIVE ATTITUDES?

چکیده

Abstract Replication is a research methodology designed to verify, consolidate, and generalize knowledge understanding within empirical fields of study. In second language studies, however, reviews share widespread concern about the infrequency replication. A common but speculative explanation for this situation that replication studies are not valued because they lack originality and/or innovation. To better understand respond in our field, 354 researchers were surveyed their attitudes toward practices conducting studies. Responses included worldwide participation from with without experience. Overall, replications evaluated as relevant valuable field. Claims originality/innovation supported. However, dissemination issues identified: half published lacked explicit labeling one quarter completed unpublished. Explicit training can address situation.

Because clauses and negative polarity licensing

In this paper, I investigate the interaction of clause-modifying adjuncts, such as because clauses, with negation and the licensing of negative polarity items. I show how an account in which because clauses are adjuncts which can be basegenerated adjoined to either IP or VP explains the ambiguity of examples containing because clauses and negation, and how, in conjunction with the roofing theor...

Specialized mechanisms for theory of mind: are mental representations special because they are mental or because they are representations?

Does theory of mind depend on a capacity to reason about representations generally or on mechanisms selective for the processing of mental state representations? In four experiments, participants reasoned about beliefs (mental representations) and notes (non-mental, linguistic representations), which according to two prominent theories are closely matched representations because both are repres...

Prototypes are attractive because they are easy on the mind.

People tend to prefer highly prototypical stimuli--a phenomenon referred to as the beauty-in-averageness effect. A common explanation of this effect proposes that prototypicality signals mate value. Here we present three experiments testing whether prototypicality preference results from more general mechanisms-fluent processing of prototypes and preference for fluently processed stimuli. In tw...

Neuromagnetic studies of visual and auditory infrequent target detection tasks

Many electrophysiological studies of infrequent target detection have been performed using ‘oddball’ paradigm in which subjects were required to detect and respond to infrequent target events embedded in a series of repetitive (frequent) events. The oddball tasks have been known to elicit prominent component of event-related potentials (ERPs) called P3, which occurs about 300 ms after the infre...
