Alternative possibilities in context

چکیده
Frankfurt cases are often presented as counterexamples to the principle that one is morally responsible for one’s action only if could have acted otherwise. But ‘could otherwise’ context-sensitive; it’s therefore open a proponent of this reply although there salient sense in which agents Frankfurt-style couldn’t otherwise, there’s another, different they have, and it latter relevant what we doing. In paper, I will evaluate prospects contextualist response. argue despite some initial signs promise, response fails, reasons were clearly anticipated Frankfurt’s original paper.

Norms, causes, and alternative possibilities
We propose Knobe’s explanation of his cases encounters a dilemma: Either his explanation works and, counterintuitively, morality is not at the heart of these effects; or morality is at the heart of the effects and Knobe’s explanation does not succeed. This dilemma is then used to temper the use of the Knobe paradigm for discovering moral norms. Knobe presents two kinds of theories that compete ...
متن کاملTime, foreknowledge, and alternative possibilities
In this article we respond to arguments from William Hasker and David Kyle Johnson that free will is incompatible with both divine foreknowledge and eternalism (what we refer to as isotemporalism). In particular, we sketch an Anselmian account of time and freedom, briefly defend the view against Hasker’s critique, and then respond in more depth to Johnson’s claim that Anselmian freedom is incom...

متن کاملThe Relevance of Alternative Possibilities throughout Cognition
Research in a number of different fields has independently argued for the importance of providing a place for modality— that is, some way of representing alternative possibilities that could have happened, but actually did not (e.g., Kratzer, 2012; Lewis, 1973; Pearl, 2000). In each of these cases, the key insight has been that people’s understanding of the things that occur is shaped in some c...
متن کاملPossibilities in network transport protocols to audio stream application context
Audio streams have always been seen as a kind of network application that don’t care about the packet loss or data integrity. In the same way, it always appears as a latency-sensitive application. However, different scenarios may be mapped from different uses of these resource onto a network data distribution. Although many applications are using UDP protocol, there are some possibilities of tr...
