متن کاملHairy cell leukemia: Update on molecular profiling and therapeutic advances.
Hairy cell leukemia was initially described as a clinicopathologic entity more than 50 years ago. We have subsequently discovered that HCL is really at least two diseases: classical HCL and the hairy cell leukemia variant. The former is among a small group of cancers exceptional for being (nearly) unified by a single genetic lesion, the BRAF V600E mutation. Over the past three decades, tremendo...
متن کاملBRAF inhibitor: targeted therapy in hairy cell leukemia.
In this issue of Blood, Dietrich et al report that the low-dose BRAF inhibitor, vemurafenib, is highly effective in refractory hairy cell leukemia. Despite enormous progress that has been made with purine nucleoside analogs as the initial treatment of patients with hairy cell leukemia, the relapse rate and eventual development of refractory disease mandate the continued search for effective new...
متن کاملHairy cell leukemia-variant.
Hairy cell leukaemia variant is a very rare chronic lymphoproliferative disorder and is closely related to hairy cell leukemia. We hereby describe a case of hairy cell leukaemia variant for the first time in Saudi Arabia. An elderly Saudi man presented with pallor, massive splenomegaly, and moderate hepatomegaly. Hemoglobin was 7.7 g/dl, Platelets were 134 x109/l and white blood count was 140x1...
متن کاملInfections in hairy-cell leukemia.
In order to determine the nature of infectious complications in hairy-cell leukemia we studied 20 consecutive patients seen at UCLA and analyzed the available literature. The incidence of serious infection in our series was 40%, and pneumonia and septicemia due to Pseudomonas and E. coli organisms were the leading types of infections. Fungal infections with Cryptococci and Histoplasma organisms...
