Novel fiber design for broadband long period gratings

We report a novel fiber design for obtaining long period gratings (LPGs) having a broad transmission spectrum. These gratings are based on guided to guided mode coupling in a staircase profile fiber. Numerical simulations predict 20 dB bandwidths as high as 100 nm and an estimated insertion loss of less than 1 dB. Such broadband LPGs are expected to find applications in many all fiber components.

Polarization-dependent loss and birefringence in long-period fiber gratings.

Widely used descriptions and relationships for birefringence and polarization-dependent loss (PDL), developed primarily for ultraviolet-induced long-period fiber gratings (LPFGs) written in optical fiber, can be invalid for other types of LPFG. The understanding of PDL is expanded to include LPFGs with birefringence in the core only, in the cladding only, and in both the core and the cladding. ...

High Temperature Optical Fiber Sensor Based on Compact Fattened Long-Period Fiber Gratings

A compact high temperature fiber sensor where the sensor head consists of a short fattened long period fiber grating (F-LPFG) of at least 2 mm in length and background loss of -5 dBm is reported. On purpose two different F-LPFGs were used to measure temperature variations, taking advantage of their broad spectrum and the slope characteristics of the erbium light source. This approach affected t...

Performance Enhancement of Long Period Fiber Gratings for Strain and Temperature Sensing

We will discuss performance optimization of strain and temperature sensors based on long period fiber gratings (LPFGs) through control of the temperature sensitivity of the resonant peak shifts. Distinction between the effects of strain and temperature is a major concern for applications to communication and sensing. This was achieved in this work by suppressing or enhancing the temperature sen...
