“A Man's Lot”: Marriage, Military Service, and the First World War

The study of personal experiences British and Australian soldiers during the First World War can be further developed through a discrete analysis married men's interactions with wartime masculine ideals. This article seeks to provide preliminary insight into such case‐study two officers serving on Western Front in 1916 correspondence they wrote their wives throughout military service. Lieutenant Max Shaw Cecil Mills both voluntarily enlisted served France 1916. Once departed homes commence training, immediately began corresponding wives, which seen as attempts mediate clashing sense domestic loyalties. As these men transitioned from civilian lifestyle, lingering identities importance marriage within manhood continued influence adoption identity.
