چکیده

Abstract Introduction Simulation is increasingly being used to augment clinical experience. However, access simulation varies geographically and national courses can be costly. The Severn School of Surgery aimed provide a locally run, cost-neutral “Basic Principles in Fracture Fixation” course standardise for core surgical trainees (CSTs). Method ran from district general hospital, accommodating lectures, case discussions, practical stations (screw fixation, plate dynamic hip screw, external fixation). Faculty donated their time devices company provided kit dry bones. CSTs organised the course. Pre- post-course self-rated Intercollegiate Surgical Curriculum Programme (ISCP) global competency ratings were recorded usefulness aspects was recorded. Results 32 candidates attended. Mean increased by at least one rating all (p < 0.05). All deemed useful (pre-course reading 27/28, lectures 31/32, discussions 31/32). No net cost incurred. Conclusions Increases skills obtained through cost-neutral, trainee-organised, regional Pre-course reading, sessions are useful. This model others curriculum.

Surgical approaches for rib fracture fixation.

Operative management of thoracic injuries is an increasingly accepted technique, with multiple reports of improved patient outcomes as compared with nonoperative treatment. Despite the evolving support of rib fracture fixation, descriptions of surgical approaches and tactics remain limited. We present this information to allow surgeons to begin or improve treatment of these injuries. In additio...

Intraoperative radiation use by trainees during ankle fracture fixation.

Orthopedic trainees are assessed during training regarding their use of radiological screening during operative procedures. The authors investigated whether orthopedic trainees' use of fluoroscopic screening during ankle fixation operations varied with the 2 variables of consultant supervision and trainee experience. Data from operative fixation of isolated Weber B ankle fractures were reviewed...

RESPONSE OF METACARPAL FRACTURE FIXATION CONSTRUCTS TO PHYSIOLOGICAL LOADINGS

This study compares the functional capabilities of different metacarpal fixation constructs under physiological loadings in an attempt to identify the optimal construct rather than the strongest one. One hundred and twenty-six preserved human metacarpals were mechanically tested after oblique osteotomies and internal fixation. Maximum load to failure, average structural rigidity, and energ...

Surgical outcomes of short-segment fixation for thoracolumbar fracture dislocation.

BACKGROUND Currently long-segment pedicle instrumentation for a thoracolumbar (T-L) fracture-dislocation is gaining in popularity. Otherwise, short-segment fixation may be chosen as an another treatment method. This article evaluates the efficacy and complications of short-segment fixation for the treatment of thoracic or lumbar spine fracture-dislocation. METHODS Twenty patients with thoraci...
